NEWS FLASH --Tim Flach, one of the featured presenters at the HIHS HAWAII HORSE EXPO, is featured in the June issue of "Cowboys & Indians" magazine (John Wayne is on the cover). This is a beautiful article featuring Tim's work and gives us a preview of what we will see on Saturday, August 15 at the Hawaii Horse Expo. Tim is truly one of the great animal photographers in the world today and his appreciation for the horse and the world of the horse can be seen in this inspiring article. So, be sure to pick up the June issue of "Cowboys & Indians" and see what a special treat we are in for when we get to meet Tim Flach at Hawaii Horse Expo! And by the way, Tim has donated four incredible photographs (one of which is featured in the article) - all beautifully mounted and framed for our silent auction.
August 15 & 16, HIHS HAWAII HORSE EXPO 2009 will take place at the Kahilu Theatre & Adjacent Grounds in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii. Proceeds from this event will go to the HIHS HORSE RESCUE FUND, established last year, to help abused and abandoned horses.
DR. ROBERT MILLER is back by popular demand. Noted equine behaviorist, author, and world wide lecturer, Dr. Miller will present a series of informative talks including
DESENSITIZATION AND SENSITIZATION, a lecture with videos, clarifying the confusion and myths surrounding these training techniques.
In SAFER HORSEMANSHIP, a lecture and demonstration with a live horse. Dr. Miller will show us how to be safe with our horses. His techniques, now widely incorporated in Vet Schools, are based upon a lifetime of working with equine patients, some quite difficult.
Everyone working with horses needs to see this.
ARE BITS NECESSARY? In this lecture Dr. Miller will help us to understand the information and misinformation about this ancient tool.

And speaking of bits... Back by popular demand,
DALE MYLER returns to further educate us about the art of bitting. Dale will be working with several horses and describing the progress each horse makes in its training using the right bit. Dale will also be revealing new ground breaking research connecting the horses's mouth and tongue pressure to the horse's overall state of health and learning ability.

Also returning for this year's expo is
RICK LAMB, the popular host of
RFD TV's THE HORSE SHOW. Last year Rick produced two television shows on his trip here. They aired in December on RFD TV. Rick will once again be moderating this year's program.
Rick has written three books....
THE REVOLUTION IN HORSEMANSHIP with Dr. Miller,
HORSE SMARTS FOR THE BUSY RIDER, and
HUMAN TO HORSEMAN. This fall Rick embarks on another new career, he will be teaching "
Equine Behavior and the Development of Natural Horsemanship" at the University of Montana in Dillon, Montana.
As part of this year's Hawaii Horse Expo Rick will be presenting his power point presentation

HIHS HAWAII HORSE EXPO 2009 is thrilled to announce that legendary Texas trainer,
Jack Brainard will be a featured clinician at this year's event.
Master of the flying lead change, Jack has been working with horses for over 50 years. Jack's background is so diverse, so full of awards and milestones, that it is impossible to mention them all. He has won World Titles in a variety of disciplines including reining, cutting, roping, and pleasure riding. In 1966 Jack helped organize THE NATIONAL REINING HORSE ASSOCIATION (NRHA). He is a longtime horse show judge and veteran ROAD TO THE HORSE judge.
At 85 Jack still trains his own 2 year olds. Here are some tips from Jack: "No cue should last longer than one second."
"The secret to training a horse is to show him how and when and where to place his feet."
Jack's never-ending enthusiasm for horses is bringing him to
HAWAII HORSE EXPO 2009. Jack will be teaching and demonstrating ADVANCED HORSEMANSHIP BASED ON COWBOY DRESSAGE.
Hawaii Horse Expo 2009 completes its roster of presenters with
renowned animal photographer TIM FLACH. Tim will be traveling to Hawaii from his home in London, England to share some of his incredible photographs and adventures with us.
Before turning his attention to animals, Tim spent twenty years as a highly successful advertising photographer. His awards are too numerous to mention, and articles on Tim's work regularly appear in professional photography journals. Tim's photographs have appeared in many international magazines. You may have seen his photographs in NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE.

EQUUS, Tim's latest book, took seven years to complete. During that time he traveled around the world documenting horses in such places as Iceland, Dubai, Mongolia, Africa and The American Southwest. In EQUUS, Tim documents and explores our relationship to horses, a relationship that goes back tens of thousands of years. He'll show us Arabians, Icelandics, Thoroughbreds, Mustangs, and the rare Przewalski's Horse - the only true wild horse. Tim will talk about the differences in the horses he photographed, how location shapes our response to the species today, and the various cultures that have evolved around horses. Tim's images are unique, powerful, informative and at times disturbing.
If you are interested in horses, you definitely do not want to miss this rare and wonderful opportunity to meet Tim and see his work.

HORSEPLAY-WHAT DOES IT MEAN? If we understand horseplay does it help us become better horse people? Find out on Saturday, August 15 at Hawaii Horse Expo. Some of us have been lucky enough to see our horses play and romp for hours--jumping and bucking and biting; intricate movement with feet off the ground; racing full out--it is glorious to watch but what does it mean? Are they just exercising? Is this about dominance? Animal photographer, Mary Buckley has taken a series of remarkable photographs of two geldings engaged in play. Noted horse trainer, clinician, and breeder, Lester Buckley, will offer insights on the behavior captured in the photographs, and suggest how we can apply this knowledge to improve our own horsemanship. Lester and Mary frequently collaborate (Lester writes the text, Mary takes the pictures) on magazine articles addressing natural horsemanship.

To rehabilitate horses like these takes a lot of money: money for veterinary care; money for special nutritional needs; money for foster care until a suitable adoption is found. Fortunately, due to our generous sponsors, every dollar raised through ticket sales to Hawaii Horse Expo will go directly into the Horse Rescue Fund and be used only for Horse Rescue.
